All Lockhart does in his books is fight monsters, however why would Justin’s mum need a book to tell her that some self defence would come in handy? To me, someone who isn’t happy with the idea of their son having the ability to do nearly anything he can think of as not being useful wouldn’t be turned around so easily. Hermione’s the only one who really gets that if you get expelled or fail out of Hogwarts you’ve just lost your entry ticket to the whole Wizarding World. She doesn’t want to lose that, and she thinks that if she does bad in her classes, they won’t let her come back. Subconsciously, I think she believes that if she does not do well and if she fails, they’ll kick her out of Hogwarts and the Wizarding World. Her greatest fear is failing her classes.
